Dynamic Psychotherapy of Depression
Lee Moo-Suk

Abstract
This paper deals with the effects and techniques of dynamic psychotherapy for depressive patients. Dynamic psychotherapy is very effective for depression patients; particularly, the more frequent the sessions, the more effective the therapy. In terms of technique, the therapist helps depressive patients to understand the internal object relationship that makes them depressed. The patients have not been able to listen to genuine inner need, and instead have tried to perfectly follow the demands of the internal object. When they gain an insight of inner reality they can be free from the demands of the harsh inner object. The therapist should be on the alert for countertransference, since depressive patients tend to form sadomasochistic relationships with others. The patients can make the therapists feel helpless and sadistic. Therefore, sometimes the therapist rejects the patient under the influence of countertransference, and sometimes the patient¡¯s family becomes exhausted and gives up taking care of the patient. The patient externalizes the internal object relationship such as the aggressor-victim relationship. The goal of dynamic psychotherapy is for the patient to understand the internal object relationship which is making him/her depressed.
